Help The Library

Volunteers are essential partners who help run the library program at Ohlone Elementary School. They assist in the library with each class (doing check in and check out), help shelve books, keep the library open at lunch recess, and periodically help cover newly acquired books.  Occasionally, there are other special projects to do as well. We are always looking for more help (volunteers). A training session will be held in September to teach new volunteers the skills they will need and to refresh the skills of returning volunteers.  (If you would like more details on specific ways you can help in the library, please see below).

Please consider either volunteering to work in the library each week with your child's class or signing up to help with other library tasks. Use the  Library Volunteer Forms to sign up. If you would rather email me directly, please e-mail me at gbunya@pausd.org.

I look forward to working together. Thanks for your support.

Ways You Can Help

Working during classroom visits:

Classes come once a week to the library to enjoy stories, learn information literacy skills, work on projects and exchange books. K-3 classes visit for 30 minutes/week, and 4-5 classes visit for 40 minutes/week. Examples of volunteer responsibilities:

  • Assist with book circulation (check-in/check-out)
  • Shelve books
  • Assist students with book selecting
  • Assist students with the online catalog
  • Assist with curriculum instruction
  • Escort children to and from the library

Note: It is possible to have multiple library volunteers for one class. Ideally, there will be two library volunteers during each class visit. Look for the sign-up sheet in your child's classroom during Back to School Night.

Recess and/or lunch supervision:

Parent volunteers will be in charge of supervising students who choose to come in for QUIET activities, such as drawing, writing, or reading. The parent would also assist with check-in and checkout as needed. On some days, the volunteer will also have time to work on library processing jobs listed on the clipboard

Library processing jobs:

Library processing jobs include repairing and covering books and helping to maintain an organized and dynamic collection. Examples of volunteer responsibilities:

  • Cover books
  • Repair books
  • Label spines
  • Stamp books
  • Sticker books
  • Organize/read shelves
  • Checking books in and shelving books

Note: This type of job is ideal for the person who needs a flexible schedule. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Library special events:

Occasionally we are fortunate enough to host an author/illustrator visit. Examples of volunteer responsibilities:

  • Coordinate book sales for author visits
  • Generate publicity prior to special events
  • Help on the day of an author visit
