After-School Activities

The Ohlone PTA offers a volunteer-run, native-speaker-taught after-school language program, the Ohlone World Languages (OWL) program.  This program is open to all Ohlone students, with pre-registration and registration early in the school year, and occurs on Wednesdays immediately after school on the Ohlone campus.  More information is available on the OWL page on the PTA website.

All other after-school programs at Ohlone are run by separate businesses or non-profits which contract with the school to rent space on campus.  The forms for the current after-school programs are provided on the PTA web site as a convenience.  Any questions about these programs or registration should be directed to the contacts listed on the forms.

After-school programs are approved by the principal (not the PTA) and sign contracts with the school, which require specific insurance coverage and rent amounts.  PTA assists the principal from time-to-time (at his request) in suggesting or vetting programs that would be a good fit for Ohlone and for our community.  The decisions of what programs to contract with and how many programs to offer are the principal’s.

If you have an after-school program to recommend, please know that these are the criteria:

  • Does the program fit within the Ohlone educational and developmental philosophy?
  • Does the program offer something that is not abundantly available in the community?
  • Does the program appeal to a significant segment of our school community?
  • Do we have physical space for the program?

Other factors which influence how many and which programs will be offered on campus:

  • No program will be added on Wednesdays (reserved for Ohlone World Languages program).
  • The aim is to strike a balance of offerings, not only to meet the various needs and interests of elementary school children but also to allow our students ample free, unstructured time.
  • Programs that are competition-based are not considered.
  • Programs limited to one gender are generally not considered.
  • Programs are required to carry insurance, pay facility-rental fees to the school, and sign contracts with Ohlone with that information.
  • Programs which offer the opportunity for scholarships or reduced fees for needy families are strongly preferred.

If you have a program to recommend which meets the above criteria, please contact the Ohlone office with as much information as possible.
