Ohlone Family Connection - September 3, 2021

Ohlone Family Connection
September 3, 2021

Ohlone has been bubbling with learning, laughing, and playing in the sunshine. Your children are inquisitive, explorative, and inclusive with their open minds and hearts. They are collaborating with their peers, listening to others, and working with each other to solve conflicts and express their feelings. It is school! We are finally back. So are the geese :).

This week, our teachers and specialists engaged in conversations around educational equity. Our courageous conversations about race, bias, and opportunity are critical and necessary in addressing the systems that impact the trajectory of success for our students who are historically underrepresented, English-language learners, socio-economically disadvantaged or students who have learning differences. Through the Every Student Reads Initiative this school year, we are focusing on elevating the reading growth of students who have been historically marginalized.

Ohlone sees the whole child, celebrates each student's unique set of gifts, and meets them where they are. Our next step is to add an anti-racist lens to everything we do, from the literature we read and the questions we ask to the requests we make of our families and the ways we invite people in. We want to ensure that every family feels included and has a voice at Ohlone. It is our Ohlone Way!

As a reminder, kinders are out at noon and grades 1-5 will be dismissed at 1:30pm today. Our staff is excited to starting the long weekend. I'm sure you are, too!

I am looking forward to having my 21-year-old son, George and my high schooler Edison under the same roof for dinner this weekend. It was my husband's birthday last weekend and they unfortunately did not have his favorite dish on the menu. While I do not eat meat, I am going to try my hand at coq au vin. If anyone has a recipe to share, I would appreciate any help I can get!

Take care and enjoy your beautiful children. These are precious times.

Ohlone Principal

Thank you!

Thank you to all of our parents who have donated their time and dollars to Ohlone this year through PTA and PiE. We are incredibly grateful for the meaningful opportunities we are able to provide for students with your help. Our instructional aides are a critical component of our instructional and social-emotional program at Ohlone. Our farm instructional assistant, Carly is a wonderful new addition, and Coach Bryant is a staple. We are fortunate to have such an exceptional music and art program. Our CASSY counselor Brittney is a true delight and a great resource for students and families. Thank you, Ohlone Families!

Parent Volunteers and Visitors

We are excited to have some parents back on campus helping with Farm Science and K/1 Art classes. We look forward to welcoming more parents in the future as we balance the needs of our instructional program and ensuring a safe environment for our students.

If you are here in person, please give us a call from the flagpole and one of our office staff will come out to assist you. The school number is listed on the sandwich board sign at the front entrance. Thank you!

Asymptomatic COVID-19 Testing
We will offeroptional COVID-19 testing every Tuesday during the school day through a partnership with Predicine Labs. Elementary students will receive the oral swab.

For anyone who has already participated in an on-site testing clinic, moving forward they will only need to complete the short form on days they want to participate in our on-site testing clinics.

For anyone who did not participate in on-site testing this week, regardless if they've done a take home test before, they will need to complete the long form to participate in one of our on-site COVID testing clinics.

If you would like us to send home a hard copy of the TRF with your child, please contact our school office and we will pop one in the backpack today.

The insurance section or attestation that you do not have insurance must be completed in order to participate. If insurance refuses to pay, the cost will not be handed down to the individual.

Green Team

If your child is interested in joining Green Team, please share the following message with them from 2/3 Teacher Ashley:

Green Team Meeting this Tuesday, September 7 from 12:15-12:45 in the Garden Lobby by the MPR. All grades welcome! Come share ideas about making Ohlone and our community even more environmentally friendly.
