Ohlone Family Connection - August 21, 2021

Ohlone Family Connection
August 21, 2021
A Beautiful Start

We did it, everyone! Our first full week of school was filled with joy and connection. Students have been building warm and inclusive classroom communities, making new friends, and reconnecting with others on the playground whom they have not seen in-person for quite some time or ever! It has been a touching start to the school year. They have all missed each other. We have missed them.

Thank you to our fabulous PTA for the welcome banner for the first day of school which made the start of school feel so special. It is comforting to finally have more in-person parent interactions, albeit brief and in the midst of the arrival and dismissal shuffle. We are looking forward to the day when we will be able to have you on campus again. We have missed your buzz!

Back-to-School-Night is virtual and on Monday, August 23. The teachers and I look forward to seeing you! Thank you to the families and staff who volunteered their time on the farm today to get dirty for our students!

Back-to-School-Night is upon us!

Teachers are excited to meet you and share a snapshot of our year ahead. They will provide helpful information as it relates to your child's development and answer any questions you may have. Best of all, you will get to see other parents in your child's class. While Zoom has its limitations for a meet and greet, I hope that you will find a way to connect outside of school. You may meet your best friends for life!

Outdoor Masking

Starting Monday, August 23, all students will be required to wear a mask both indoors and outdoors. Students are permitted to take off their masks while eating. Distancing will be encouraged during lunch.

Class Newsletters
You will receive a weekly or bi-monthly newsletter from your child's teacher. Teachers will recap the week, share what's ahead, and provide important reminders and tips for home.

Ohlone Family Connection (OFC)
I will send the OFC every other Friday. You will receive reminders and update during the in-between time.

I will do my best to respond to emails within 2 school days. I read and respond to emails during work hours. Teachers will also follow this protocol to reserve their evenings and weekends for rest, play, and rejuvenation. Thank you!

Parent Inquiries
Your child's teacher is the best person to respond to questions or concerns you may have about your child's experience at school. I am happy to support problem-solving once you have worked with your child's teacher to address the concerns. Elsa is our new assistant principal who is another support. We operate on the philosophy of Seek to Understand and Assume Positive Intention when talking about kids. We are here to partner with you as we support all students where they are emotionally and developmentally.
Meet the Ohlone Office Team
Jane Heike Xio
Jane Dick and Heike Enders are the dynamic duo who combine to make one amazing school secretary. Jane works all day Mondays/Thursdays, Heike works full days on Tuesdays/Fridays, and they alternate AM/PM on Wednesdays. They are in close communication so nothing ever falls through the cracks :). Send emails to and one of them will get back to you.

Xiomara Rodriguez is our fantastic school clerk! She can support you with your attendance questions, and well, pretty much anything :). Should you have a COVID related matter to report, please send both Xio and me an email or call the office.

Every Student Reads Initiative
The Every Student Reads Initiative is just that - Every Student Reads! Our K-3 teachers went through a summer Orton-Gillingham training on a multi-sensory approach to teaching and learning phonics. We will be analyzing and monitoring our reading data and progress for our Historically Under Represented (HUR) students, English language learners, and students with disabilities. We are excited to do the work to get all Ohlone students to fall in love with reading because they can.

Parent Education & Resources

Palo Alto Unified School District is pleased to invite you to join our 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Forming Challenge! We appreciate the community partners who joined us to launch this Challenge: The City of Palo Alto, Youth Community Service and the Palo Alto PTA Council.

We cannot achieve equity and justice for all Palo Alto residents, students and employees without challenging our belief systems about the origins of the concept of race, how it influences us as individuals and as an organization, and how it functions to preserve inequity in our education, laws, institutions and systems. This is a powerful opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of how inequity and racism affect our lives and our community.
